Autism Spectrum Assessment
At Therapy SoCal, an autism spectrum diagnosis is a process of understanding—not labeling. Our evaluations are designed to recognize each individual’s unique way of experiencing, processing, and interacting with the world, while providing the clarity needed to access meaningful support.

Autism can present in many different ways and is not always obvious early in development. Some individuals—particularly those who are high-masking, verbally strong, gifted, or socialized to meet external expectations—may be identified later in childhood or adolescence. These individuals often expend significant energy compensating for underlying social, sensory, or regulatory differences, which can lead to increased anxiety, exhaustion, or emotional distress over time. Our assessments are sensitive to these nuanced presentations and designed to capture the full picture.

The diagnostic process is comprehensive and developmentally informed. It typically includes caregiver interviews, detailed developmental history, behavioral observations, and standardized assessment measures. As part of this process, Therapy SoCal utilizes the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2)—widely recognized as the gold standard for autism spectrum diagnosis. The ADOS-2 provides structured opportunities to observe social communication, interaction, and play or conversation in a standardized, evidence-based manner. Results are interpreted in the context of the individual’s history, cognitive profile, and real-world functioning.

A central focus of autism assessment at Therapy SoCal is advocacy and support planning. Families receive a clear, comprehensive report that can be used to support IEP eligibility, access school-based services, and guide individualized accommodations. Recommendations are practical, strengths-based, and written to support collaboration with educational teams.

We approach autism diagnosis through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, recognizing that differences in communication, social engagement, and sensory processing are part of natural human variation. Our goal is to reduce barriers, support authentic functioning, and help individuals and families move forward with understanding, validation, and confidence.
