IQ Assessment

At Therapy SoCal, IQ testing is not about a number—it’s about understanding how a child thinks, learns, and engages with the world. Cognitive assessment can be especially helpful when there are questions about learning differences, academic mismatch, or a child whose abilities and challenges do not fit neatly into one category.

IQ testing evaluates core areas of cognitive functioning, including verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, working memory, processing speed, and problem-solving. This comprehensive profile helps identify patterns of strength and vulnerability, including gifted abilities, advanced reasoning, and cases of twice-exceptionality (2e)—when a child is both gifted and has a learning disability, ADHD, or other neurodevelopmental difference.

Children who are gifted or twice-exceptional are often misunderstood in school settings. Strong verbal skills or advanced reasoning can mask underlying challenges, while difficulties with attention, processing speed, or executive functioning may obscure a child’s true cognitive potential. Our assessments are designed to clarify these complex profiles and tell the full story of how a child learns.

The evaluation process includes caregiver consultation, record review, and carefully selected standardized measures, with attention to emotional, cultural, and contextual factors. Results are interpreted thoughtfully and translated into clear, actionable recommendations.

IQ testing at Therapy SoCal is frequently used to support school-based advocacy, including IEP or 504 Plan eligibility, access to gifted programming, and appropriate accommodations or enrichment. Reports are written with implementation in mind, helping families confidently navigate school meetings and advocate for services that match both a child’s strengths and needs.

At Therapy SoCal, we believe that recognizing cognitive strengths is just as important as identifying challenges. With a clear understanding of a child’s learning profile, families and schools can provide support that nurtures confidence, curiosity, and long-term academic and emotional success.
