EDUCATIONAL THERAPY

Some children work incredibly hard but continue to struggle with organization, homework completion, reading comprehension, writing, attention, or academic confidence. Educational therapy bridges the gap between learning and emotional well-being by helping students understand how they learn and develop the skills they need to succeed.

At Therapy SoCal, educational therapy combines evidence-based learning strategies with individualized support to address the underlying factors that interfere with academic success. Whether a child has ADHD, learning differences, executive functioning challenges, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety, or simply feels overwhelmed by school demands, our goal is to help them build competence, confidence, and independence.

What Is Educational Therapy?

Educational therapy is a specialized intervention that integrates principles from education, psychology, and learning science. Unlike tutoring, which focuses primarily on academic content, educational therapy addresses the learning processes that impact academic performance.

Educational therapists help students:

  • Develop effective study and learning strategies

  • Improve organization and time-management skills

  • Strengthen reading comprehension and written expression

  • Build self-monitoring and self-advocacy skills

  • Improve working memory and attention strategies

  • Develop coping skills for academic frustration and anxiety

  • Increase confidence and motivation for learning

Who Can Benefit?

Educational therapy may be beneficial for students who:

  • Have ADHD or executive functioning challenges

  • Have diagnosed learning disabilities

  • Struggle with reading, writing, or academic organization

  • Have Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Experience school-related anxiety

  • Feel overwhelmed by increasing academic demands

  • Underperform despite strong intellectual abilities

  • Need support transitioning to middle school, high school, or college

Our Approach

We begin with a comprehensive understanding of your child's strengths, challenges, learning style, and academic goals. Services are individualized and may include collaboration with parents, teachers, schools, and other providers to create a coordinated plan for success.

Our approach is strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming, and tailored to each student's developmental needs.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION COACHING

Many students know what they need to do but struggle to consistently follow through. They may forget assignments, lose materials, underestimate how long tasks will take, procrastinate, or become overwhelmed when managing multiple responsibilities.

Executive Function Coaching helps students develop the practical skills needed to plan, organize, initiate, and complete tasks more independently.

What Are Executive Functions?

Executive functions are the brain-based skills that help us manage ourselves and our daily responsibilities. These skills include:

  • Planning and prioritizing

  • Organization

  • Time management

  • Task initiation

  • Sustained attention

  • Working memory

  • Emotional regulation

  • Flexible thinking

  • Goal-directed persistence

  • Self-monitoring

When executive functioning skills are underdeveloped, even highly intelligent students can struggle academically and emotionally.

What Is Executive Function Coaching?

Executive Function Coaching is a structured, collaborative process that helps students develop systems and strategies for managing school, responsibilities, and daily life.

Rather than simply reminding students what to do, coaching focuses on teaching them how to create sustainable habits and routines that promote independence.

Coaching may focus on:

  • Assignment tracking systems

  • Calendar and planner use

  • Homework routines

  • Study and test preparation strategies

  • Long-term project planning

  • Time awareness and scheduling

  • Organization of materials and digital platforms

  • Goal setting and accountability

  • Self-advocacy skills

Who Benefits from Executive Function Coaching?

Executive Function Coaching is particularly helpful for:

  • Students with ADHD

  • Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Twice-exceptional (2e) learners

  • College-bound adolescents

  • College students

  • Students transitioning to new schools

  • Students who are bright but inconsistent in performance

  • Individuals struggling with organization, procrastination, or follow-through

Our Coaching Philosophy

At Therapy SoCal, we recognize that executive functioning challenges are not a matter of laziness, lack of motivation, or poor character. These skills develop over time and often require explicit instruction, practice, and support.

Our coaches provide practical tools, accountability, and encouragement while helping students build confidence in their ability to manage increasing demands at school and beyond. The ultimate goal is greater independence, self-confidence, and success in everyday life.
